Advancing Rubber Performance and Sustainability with Liquid Polybutadiene “NISSO-PB”

Hokuto Ohura
Business Development Dept., Chemicals Business div.

NISSO-PB is Nippon Soda’s independently synthesized liquid 1,2-polybutadiene, characterized by its high 1,2-vinyl content and high reactivity. This distinctive molecular structure differentiates NISSO-PB from conventional liquid polybutadienes and enables it to participate effectively in crosslinking reactions. Using EPDM as an example, this seminar will demonstrate how the high 1,2-vinyl content of NISSO-PB influences rubber performance, including mechanical properties, oil resistance, and compression set. The seminar will also introduce liquid 1,2-epoxidized polybutadiene for halogenated rubbers. Its epoxy groups function as acid acceptors, while its remaining 1,2-vinyl units contribute to crosslinking. The use of liquid 1,2-epoxidized polybutadiene in halogenated rubber formulations can enhance performance, including water and acid resistance. Its potential as an alternative to conventional lead-based acid acceptors will also be discussed, highlighting its contribution to more sustainable rubber formulation design.

Addressing Key Challenges for Tires and Rubber Goods with Simulation-Guided Design of Carbon Blacks

Prof. Lewis B. Tunnicliffe
Birla Carbon

This talk will review the development of reinforcing fillers such as carbon black to address key performance challenges for tires and rubber goods. A focus is placed on simulation techniques which can assist the targeted development and selection of carbon blacks for multi-component engineered devices such as tires, where interactions and tradeoffs between component compounds are critical to holistic tire performance, yet are frequently overlooked. We will also demonstrate how insights from component FEA simulations can be used to guide carbon black selection for automotive bushings, resulting in simultaneous benefits to durability and dynamic performance of final components. Microstructural simulations of particle reinforced rubber compounds are also reviewed.

Multi-Citraconimide Oligomer AR906: Synthesis, Evaluation and Application in Natural Rubber Compounds as Multifunctional Rubber Additive

Jin Yuan
Jiangsu Rebo New Material Technology Co., Ltd.

A novel bio‑based multi‑citraconimide oligomer AR906 (≈50 wt% bio‑content) was synthesized via amidation and dehydration‑cyclization with over 90 % yield. Combining rigid imide rings and flexible oligomer segments, AR906 acts as a multi‑functional rubber additive for high‑performance tires.

FT‑IR and ¹H‑NMR verified its target structure. During vulcanization, AR906 forms‑C‑S‑hybrid networks via Michael addition with NR and repairs broken sulfur cross-links through Diels‑Alder reaction. Higher functionality builds denser 3D crosslink networks with enhanced reactivity.

In TBR tread and apex compounds, AR906 maintains excellent anti‑reversion performance, it improves crosslink density, hardness, tensile and tear strength, while reducing hysteresis loss and heat build‑up.

Optimizing Carbon Black Selection for Anti-Vibration Components

Amrish Padmakumar
Birla Carbon

Anti-vibration system (AVS) components such as mounts and bushings require distinct dynamic performance characteristics. Mounts typically demand low dynamic stiffness for improved vibration isolation, whereas bushings require higher rigidity for load support, isolation, and cushioning. Carbon black plays an important role in achieving these performance targets by influencing reinforcement and filler network development. A range of carbon black grades is evaluated to establish relationships among carbon black characteristics, dispersion quality, and the dynamic-to-static stiffness ratio (Kd/Ks), or spring rate. Variations in carbon black colloidal properties have been shown to influence the dispersion of the compound and its spring rate behavior, resulting in distinct performance profiles across the evaluated grades. The findings demonstrate how carbon black selection can be used to tailor dynamic stiffness for specific AVS components.

A machine supplier’s perspective

Midge Spiekermann
HF GROUP / Harburg-Freudenberger Maschinenbau GmbH

The tyre industry is facing significant challenges driven by increasing sustainability requirements, electrification of vehicles, changing compound formulations and the need for higher manufacturing efficiency. Higher silica loadings, bio-based materials and recycled raw materials require more robust and precisely controlled production processes while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, machine technologies capable of improving process stability and resource efficiency have become an essential enabler for future tyre manufacturing.

The presentation will present two complementary technology developments addressing these challenges: a data-driven optimisation approach for the final mixing stage (Smart Final Mix) and an electrically heated curing technology replacing conventional steam-based curing.
